Planning & Design for a New Beachfront Holiday House
Primmer Olds B.A.S were delighted to be commissioned to provide architectural services for a new beachfront holiday house on the Isle of Wight. The site, formerly the home of a static caravan, has subsequently been transformed to provide a stunning four bedroom house overlooking the Solent.
On a steeply banked site, the new house was designed as two simple box forms, staggered in their setting to respond to the natural topography whilst also providing a series of external terraces to take advantage of the unique
views and location. On the upper floor the design provides three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a terrace also supplied for the two main bedrooms. The lower floor is partially tucked into the slope to neatly provide a further
bedroom, shower room and open plan living space with full aspect overlooking the beach. A series of further terraces are provided in the external landscaping, stepping down to the beach, giving ample room for external family space,
external shower, fire pit and storage.
The new building is clad in larch, softening the appearance of the building when viewed from the Solent, whilst providing a crisp modern look. The cladding was also designed to distinguish between, and reinforce the two
‘box’ forms, with the upper floor being provided with a ‘hit and miss’ approach which lightens its visual appearance.
Primmer Olds B.A.S led the design of the project from the outset, working through numerous options with the client during the early project inception to ensure the layout and appearance met the client requirements. The scheme
was then taken through a successful planning application, detailed design process and finally through construction stages, being completed in August 2024.
